FCKeditor

This plugin utilizes Movable Type 4.1's ability to swap out the default Movable Type Rich Text Editor for a third party one. This plugin makes available the FCKeditor as a rich text editor to choose from inside the application.

One advantage the FCK Editor has over the default Movable Type RTE is that it outputs semantic and valid XHTML for your published blog. A feature desired by many Movable Type users.

Instructions

To enable the FCK Editor install the plugin and add this line to your mt-config.cgi file:

 RichTextEditor FCKeditor

Using the 12/24 MTOS nightly, the plugin exhibits the following behavior:

  • It is impossible to save an entry with the plugin. You also cannot preview. The buttons for doing so seem disabled.

  • The plugin only inserts the FCK Editor IF you specify Rich Text as the default for the blog. If you move to Rich Text while editing, the plug-in does not insert the FCKeditor. You get the standard MT Rich Text editor instead.

The FCK editor does seem to provide a nice editing experience. It's thrilling to see it issue forth with semantic xhtml.

I read the Readme. I installed simply by moving things in the various subdirectories to where they seemed to need to go. Did I do all of the steps. The Readme seemed to give additional configuration steps, but they did not seem necessary to get the base functionality.

Hey bud,

That has been fixed in v1.1

BTW, 1.2 is out now

David, I have v1.2. The site I'm installing to doesn't have shell access, so I unpacked the tarball with WinRar. I got an error message saying a file was corrupt.

I uploaded anyway, and added the line to mt-config. When I went into MT nothing appeared to change. Is there no files to go into the "plugins" dir for the program? There were only files to go into mt-static with this.

Pls advise, and thanks!

Looking further into this I copied the URL and grabbed v1.0 and v1.1. The files in these tarballs are different in some cases. There is no mt/plugins/FCKEditor folder in v1.2, for example, only in v1.0.

I finally copied over whatever files I could find were missing, and my entry window says:

Page Not Found /mt-static/plugins/FCKeditor/fckeditor/editor/fckeditor.html

I couldn't find this file in any of the archives.

Can you possibly re-upload v1.2 with all the files, or explain why I might be having these problems?

Thanks.

Hey David,

I just installed v1.2 on MT 4.1 (not the open source version) and it seems to be working perfectly except for one thing. When you go to an entry that was not originally created using FCK editor when you choose Rich Text it loads up the default Movable Type rich text editor and not the FCK editor. There seems to be no way to get these existing entries to use the replacement FCK editor even when the mt-config.cgi RichTextEditor parameter is specified.

Not sure if this is a 'feature' or a bug, can you check it out?

Thanks!

Here's some more information David...

If you go to Manage Entries and then select an entry that already existed prior to installing the FCKeditor plugin then when you choose Rich Text or go back and forth between Rich Text and Convert Line Breaks the original Movable Type editor loads.

If you, however, select Rich Text and then choose Save once the entry is saved and then loaded again it will load with the FCKeditor.

Looks like it's an annoying little bug possibly in Movable Type rather than your plugin.

I really don't mean to make this seem harsh, but this package really needs to be... repackaged. There's just no need to include the SVN folders and all of the example/cross-platform templates for this.

It's 1493 files as it stands now, I can't imagine any more than 20-30% of that being needed in a live deployment.

Hi David, have actually now just installed this on an MT4.1 blog after several months hiatus. I'm glad to see that it works for publishing entries now. Very nice.

My experience mirrors that of http://kaan.myopenid.com with the same workaround. Also, if you start a new entry and switch to RichText, you get the old RichText editor. You seem to have to set RichText as the default for new entries for the FCKEditor to load appropriately.

It feels like the FCKEditor is somehow only being partially registered as the Rich Text Editor.

Files that I upload are not visible via the asset manager. Is there a way for FCKeditor's file upload tool to integrate with the MT4 asset manager at all?

Also, here's some info on customizing the plugin for a minimal semantic-based set of options: http://boblet.tumblr.com/post/32491901/semantic-text-entry-for-mt4

thanks ! injoy www.movabletype.org

Can you provide a list of websites using this plugin? thanks

This plugin is a great help, as the default rich-text editor in Movable Type doesn't have a paste-from-Word option.

Maybe I overlooked it, but does FCKeditor have an Insert File option? That seems like the only option I'm missing from MT's default RTE after I installed the FCKeditor plugin.
