Page Layout

The Page Layout plugin for Movable Type allows authors to select from more than one template (or "layout") for a given page or entry. For example, a web site may wish to suppress advertising on certain pages. This plugin would allow for the designer of that web site to create to different page archive templates - one with advertising and one without. The author or editor of the site can then choose which template should be used when rendering that page.

I love this plugin in theory, but in practice it can create some issues. If you uninstall it, your pages will be stuck with the template you last saved them to, even if it no longer exists. The only way (I can see) to remedy this is to go into your database and reset template_id to NULL.

I too loved the idea of this plug in. However, if you delete a template and rebuild, your site will hang. The only work around I could come up with was to go back to each page that had used the old template and changed it back to the default "page" template.

In the end, I replicated the functionality by using a combination of custom fields and statements in the page template.

Can you completely uninstall this plug in by removing it, or does it create additional database fields?
